"He sat, in defiance of municipal orders,
astride the gun Zam-Zammah
on her brick platform (…)"
The pauses in the sentence are very important, as the reciting English Patient reminded us.
This is an extremely beautiful book. It portrays a lost world, the colonised India, it tells about the search of a small boy for his destiny, it follows the spiritual quest of the Tibetan Teshoo lama.
The friendship between the lama, who barely lives in this world, and his young pupil and street-wise protector is one of the finest in literature as far as I know.

This book is part of my personal canon.
