L’Encre verte de Pablo Neruda
These are memories, not memoirs. The French author Pierre Kalfon lived in Chili from 1967 till 1973, and visited the country after the fall of Pinochet. He was first professor of French literature at the University of Santiago and became later a correspondent for the well-known journal Le Monde. The late sixties and early seventies were special times in Chili. He had the opportunity to meet Pablo Neruda. He was a keen observer of the changing political life which culminated in the installation of Salvador Allende as president. And, unfortunately, he was also a witness to the military coup that put General Pinochet in charge for the coming 17 years. The same Pinochet that sent Mr Kalfon back to France, as a persona non grata. Pierre Kalfon has a graceful pen. In light chapters he tells about the times he lived in, the things he saw. He makes this book of reminiscences into a very engaging story.
