|For some people this would be a collector’s item: an original Penguin pocket book from 1956. Probably still with Jan Tschichold’s layout. And of course with Eric Gill’s typography.
1956 is not that long ago (please, don’t argue, I was born in 1953), but the book looks as if it came from another epoch altogether. Look at the front with the pencil drawing and the price: 2/6. That would be 2 shillings and 6 pence, wouldn’t it?
Anyway, it’s a fine book. Forester is a master story-teller. He’d prove this with his magnificent Hornblower series. And this story is fun, engaging, a good read, although not in the category of his novel The ship.
