In The Sleep of Reason CP Snow tells the unsettling story of a five year old boy that was abducted by two young women. They tortured him during a whole weekend and in the end killed him. Snow unfolds the story mainly through the trial of the two women. I can only describe the feelings this novel evokes with the German word unheimlich.

Unheimlich also seems the correct word for this absorbing novel by Pat Barker. The murder of a child always shocks people, but how can we ever understand why a child itself murders?
One of the protagonists of Border Crossing is a young man (Danny) that once, as a boy, killed an old lady. He has served out his sentence and lives under another identity. He has huge difficulties adjusting to the world, and indeed, the book starts with his attempted suicide.
The fact that he is saved from a cold and dirty river by the child psychologist (Tom) that years ago had to examine and evaluate the child, is too much of a coincidence. Reluctantly, Tom is drawn back into Danny’s world, where the border between good and evil, innocence and guilt are blurred.
They have to confront each other, and their own past. For Tom it is even more difficult, as his wife is divorcing him. The demands on Tom become very extreme and the book really becomes a thrilling psychological novel.

As in many of her other books, certainly in the Regenation trilogy, Pat Barker shows that she has an enormous insight in people. She writes sensitive, clear, without frills.

Ik kocht dit boekje op de luchthaven Charles De Gaulle toen ik uit Bolivië terugkwam. Ik had niets meer om te lezen en dit sprak me het meest aan in de schrale collectie van een luchthavenboekenwinkeltje.
Het was een goede keus. Het beschrijft het verhaal van de negenjarige Nojoud die door haar vader uitgehuwelijkt wordt aan een oudere man. Zij leeft volop in een kinderwereld, ze hoort te spelen op straat met vriendinnetjes, maar kan niet tegen het besluit van haar vader ingaan. Ondanks de belofte van haar echtgenoot om haar pas te ‘benaderen’ na de eerste menstruatie, wordt ze al in de huwelijksnacht verkracht. Nojoud beschrijft de gevoelens van angst, schaamte, pijn, en vooral van totale verlatenheid. Ver weg van haar ouders en zusjes, bij een schoonmoeder die haar in het gareel wil doen lopen.
Maar zij heeft ook gezonde opstandige gevoelens. En die doen haar op een dag iets zeer gewaagd en moedig doen: zij stapt een rechtbank binnen en blijft daar wachten tot er een rechter haar wil helpen.

Het verhaal is opgeschreven door journalist en Midden-Oosten correspondent Delphine Minoui. Het is de wereld rond gegaan. En alom was er afschuw voor haar verhaal, voor het lot van de vrouw en van jonge meisjes in vele arme landen. Terecht natuurlijk, ik had dezelfde gevoelens van ongeloof en weerzin.
Maar daarnaast vielen me twee zaken op. Ten eerste, vrouwen houden deze starre mannenwereld mee in stand. Nojoud’s moeder en schoonmoeder, tantes, allen ondergingen haar lot als pijnlijk, maar onvermijdelijk. En zelfs, durf ik zeggen, met wat heimelijk leedvermaak: ik heb dit doorgemaakt, nu is het jouw beurt. Het is de gang van de wereld. De oudere vrouwen hebben niet de moed of het lef om die vicieuse cirkel te doorbreken ten bate van hun dochtertjes.
Bovendien bedacht ik dat de spontane reacties zoals ‘wat een achterlijk volk’ niet volledig juist zijn. Natuurlijk is in Jemen (en andere ontwikkelingslanden) nog veel achterlijkheid, ongeletterdheid, armoede. Maar we mogen niet uit het oog verliezen dat Nojoud geholpen werd door een vooruitstrevende advocate én dat een Jemenitische rechter wel degelijk het huwelijk ontbonden heeft.

I am not an economist and never would have chosen this field as a profession. But I have been a banker for the greatest part of my life, working with and understanding the financial doings of companies. So, at one time I had to study some economic basics. I must say that I always had extreme difficulties understanding this sheer mechanical thinking: you raise this and that will go down, you restrain that and this will happen. I never could imagine that this was about real people and companies (which in the end are also real people).

Then, why did I buy and read this short biography of John Maynard Keynes? Because I think he was different. Because he was a member of the Bloomsbury circle, befriended with E.M. Forster, Lytton Strachey, Viginia Woolf, and the like. Because he could write, was a spirited person, and was prepared to change his mind when facts or new thinking overruled his older views.
Keynes was a rich man. The royalties of his books already guaranteed him a life without financial sorrows, but he managed to make a lot more money out of his lifelong investments on the financial markets.
He was not obsessed by money, though, and he was a real Bloomsburyan in that he loved the arts (and he was a patron). Last year I read a selection of Wittgenstein’s letters; apparently Keynes helped him, also financially, on several occasions.

Mr Clarke’s book is a biography as I like them. It is short, well written, with the right mixture of sympathy and criticism. The actual biographical part only takes up some 95 pages. The rest of the book is a history of his changing economic ideas, eventually resulting in The General Theory of Employment Interest and Money. This might have been written for the fine series, edited by Atlantic Books, presenting the biographies of influential books (eg Thomas Paine’s Rights of Man or Darwin’s Origin of Species, A Biography).
While reading I was thinking that Keynes’s continuous effort to change deficient economic policies is an example of how difficult it is to plan and change the behaviour of countries, of societies. Societies as un unwieldy vehicle, where changing a direction seems above the capability of one man. Look at Mr Obama’s difficulties in setting up a decent healthcare system. Of course, some men are more equal than others. More equal to such a task, that is.

De laatste jaren lees ik meer non-fictie dan fictie, dacht ik. Het schijnt een normale evolutie te zijn als je ouder wordt.
Ik merk alleszins dat ik er minder gauw toe kom om nieuwe fictie te lezen. Als ik wat moe ben, of nood aan wat rustig tijdverdrijf, grijp ik makkelijk terug naar goede boeken die ik vroeger al las.

Zo heb ik bv Vestdijk en Max Frisch ettelijke keren gelezen. Ook Dürrenmatt komt regelmatig eens aan de beurt. Ik vind De verdenking niet zijn sterkste boek. Dan denk ik in eerste instantie aan Der Richter und sein Henker, en aan Das Versprechen, minder aan Justiz.
Maar hij heeft ook prachtige theaterstukken en luisterspelen geschreven. En een kortverhaal als Die Panne is gewoon een juweeltje.

Dürrenmatt schrijft detectiveverhalen op zijn eenvoudigst. Niet met de broeierige sfeer van Simenon, meer helder, eenvoudig, met humor en veel inzicht in mensen. Het slot is hier wat teleurstellend, maar de opbouw van het verhaal blijft me boeien, én blijft leesbaar, ook al heb ik het misschien al vijf keer gelezen.
