Peter Benenson died on February 25th, aged 83. In May 1961 he started with a remarkable action. In an article in The Observer he wrote about several “forgotten prisoners” and he proposed a 12-month letter-writing campaign. This was the first action of what was to become a new and successful organisation: Amnesty International.
Jonathan Power wrote a fine book about the organisation: Like Water on Stone.
Read more about him on the official Amnesty International site.
